Why All-Natural Cleaners?

Swapping out your cleaning supplies for all-natural cleaners provides numerous benefits for you, your family, and the environment. Unlike conventional cleaning products with harsh chemicals and synthetic fragrances, natural cleaners have fewer toxins and are often scented with essential oils. These eco-friendly alternatives are free of chemicals such as phosphates, chlorine, and nitrates that can irritate your skin and respiratory system and even disrupt hormonal balance. Additionally, utilizing all-natural cleaners reduces your environmental footprint, as they are usually biodegradable and less likely to contribute to water pollution.

Switching to greener products, especially homemade solutions, ensures a long-term safer home and supports an earth-friendly lifestyle. Don’t wait to reap the benefits of all-natural cleaning products. Here are several effective natural cleaning recipes you can try out for every room of your home:

All-Purpose Cleaner

An all-purpose natural cleaner can be used throughout your home on hard surfaces. Made with eco-friendly ingredients, it will make your home look fresh. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 tsp Borax
  • 1 tsp Castile Soap
  • ½ tsp Washing Soda
  • 4 Drops of Lemon Essential Oil
  • 4 Drops of Orange Essential Oil
  • 2 Cups Distilled Water

Once you’ve gathered the supplies, place the borax, washing soda (not to be confused with baking soda), essential oils, and soap in a glass spray bottle (Amazon sells them here). Then, add the distilled water until the bottle is almost full, ensuring you leave room for the sprayer. Boiled water is an excellent alternative if you don’t have distilled water. Once you’ve added all the ingredients, screw on the lid and shake well. Use this all-purpose cleaner in the bathroom, kitchen, and even your children’s toys!

DIY Natural Kitchen Cleaners

Floor Cleaner

  • 1 Cup Vinegar
  • 1 Gallon Hot Water
  • ½–⅛ tsp Seventh Generation Dish Soap

White vinegar is a typical household cleaner for wood and tile floors. Dump these ingredients into a bucket and mop your floors for a spotless finish. Dish soap is ideal for tile floors since it picks up grease and grime buildup. If you’re using this recipe on hardwood floors, we recommend swapping out the dish soap for a few drops of essential oil; lavender or lemon is perfect if you’d like your home to smell fresh and clean.

Oven Cleaner

  • ½ Cup Baking Soda
  • 2–3 Tbsp Water
  • ½ Cup (or more) White Vinegar

Mix baking soda and water in a small bowl, adjusting the amount of water as needed to form a spreadable paste. Spread this mixture on the walls of your oven, rubbing it in to scrub the grime buildup. Let this mixture rest and do its work overnight. Then, in the morning, put some vinegar in a spray bottle and spray it wherever you see baking soda, which creates a foaming action. After a few minutes, wipe this clean with a damp cloth, leaving your oven with a shiny new look.

Dishwasher Cleaner

  • 1 Cup White Vinegar
  • 1 Cup Baking Soda

Fill a dishwasher-safe bowl with the white vinegar and place it on the bottom of your empty dishwasher. Set the dishwasher on a hot water cycle, allowing the vinegar to break down any remaining bits of grease, soap scum, food, and other grime. Once the cycle ends, remove the bowl and sprinkle the baking soda along the bottom of the dishwasher. Run it on a short cycle and let it remove any leftover stains. Use the natural all-purpose cleaner for the dishwasher door.

DIY Natural Living Room & Bedroom(s) Cleaners

Carpet or Rug Cleaner

  • ½ Cup White Vinegar
  • ½ Cup Hot Water
  • 5–10 Drops of Essential Oil (lavender, lemon, or peppermint)

White vinegar isn’t just a powerful cleaning agent; it’s also effective at eliminating odors such as pet urine or mildew, leaving your carpet or rug clean and fresh-smelling. Before cleaning, vacuum the carpet. If you have a carpet cleaner, fill the machine reservoir with this solution. Test this natural carpet cleaner on a less visible flooring spot to ensure it works. After 24 hours, check the test spot, and if it’s effective, run your machine over the entire carpet, paying particular attention to stains or spots.

If you don’t have a carpet-cleaning machine, we recommend putting this mixture in a glass bottle, spraying the entirety of your carpet, and allowing it to sit for 10 minutes. Using a clean, damp cloth or sponge, gently scrub the carpet. For stubborn stains on carpets or rugs, use an all-natural bar soap from Mrs. Meyer’s to wash the affected area, then rinse with a damp cloth and water.

Dusting Spray

  • 1 Tbsp Castile Soap
  • 10–15 Drops of Lemon Essential Oil
  • 2 Cups Water

Mix these ingredients into a spray bottle and shake to combine. Use as you would any typical dusting spray. For best results, we recommend utilizing microfiber cloths.

Wood Polisher

  • ¾ Cup Olive Oil
  • ¼ Cup White Vinegar
  • 20–30 Drops of Essential Oils (optional)

Combine ingredients in a spray bottle and shake vigorously. Spray directly onto wood surfaces and buff with a clean, dry cloth. Ensure the mixture is shaken before every use.

DIY Natural Bathroom Cleaners

Mirror & Window Cleaner

  • ⅓ Cup White Vinegar
  • 2 Cups Water
  • 5–10 Drops of Essential Oil

Add the ingredients to a bottle and spray the dirt off mirrors, windows, and other glass surfaces. You no longer need 3 different cleaners for each surface—just this natural cleaner! Use a microfiber cloth for streak-free results, ensuring your mirrors and windows sparkle.

Toilet Bowl Cleaner

  • 1 Cup Baking Soda
  • ½ Cup White Vinegar
  • 2–4 Drops of Essential Oils (optional)
  • 2 Empty Jars
  • Toilet Scrubbing Brush
  • Pumice Stone (optional)

Place the baking soda in a bowl and add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to the solution if you’d like. Add the mixture to a glass jar. Pour the white vinegar into a separate bottle and store it alongside the dry cleaner. Then, add a couple of scoops of the baking powder mixture into the toilet and let it sit for 1–2 minutes. Scrub the entire toilet with a scrub brush and add the vinegar to the toilet, allowing it to bubble. Scrub the toilet once again and flush.

DIY Natural Laundry Room Cleaners

All-Natural Laundry Detergent

  • ½ Cup Borax
  • ½ Cup Washing Soda
  • ½ Cup Seventh Generation Dish Soap
  • 4 Cups Hot Water
  • Clean & empty gallon plastic jug

Combine borax, washing soda, and dish soap in the container and pour water to dissolve the ingredients. Fill the container to the top with cold water and shake before using. For a standard-sized load of laundry, ¼ cup of the mixture should work. Use more for a heavily soiled load. This natural cleaner recipe also works for HE washers!

Clothing Stain Remover

  • ½ Cup Hydrogen Peroxide
  • ¼ Cup Seventh Generation Dish Soap

In a small bottle, use a funnel (if desired) to pour 1 part Seventh Generation dish soap into 2 parts fresh hydrogen peroxide—such as ¼ cup of dish soap to ½ cup of hydrogen peroxide—following the above-mentioned ratio. Shake the bottle to mix the solution and apply it to the stained area. Wait a few minutes and then rub the stain with a brush or clean white cloth. Ensure the stain is moving, lessening, or reacting to the mixture. Throw the clothing into the laundry as usual and take out a stain-free item!
